Religous ed reading list suggestions? Empty Religous ed reading list suggestions?

We have been using a "latin centered curriculum" approach for the last couple of years for our children ages 2 - 8. My husband teaches our children (now ages 6 and Cool religion and this consists of the Faith and Life Series, intermingled with some CHC, daily mass, rosary, and lots of sitting down to read bible stories, saint stories etc. They also receive lots of faith based instruction through Children's Adoration, Homeschool activities, parish religious ed. etc. etc. My husband has asked me to help him come up with a "reading list" that he can work through with our children this year. He will probably continue with Faith and Life series - but frankly he and the girls do not find it really very interesting or challenging. It is rich and wonderful because it is our faith, but he wants to expand a bit and read, read, read with them. Do you have any suggestions for these ages (girls in 1st and 3rd grade)? I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

You could try Catholic Mosaic which uses picture books or the reading lists in Eizabeth Foss' book Real Learning. Or you could take a look at the Emmanuel Books catalog: There are many suggestions for religious books in there. Another possibilty is the Neumann Press catalog or the St. Francis Books catalog (this one is from a homeschooking family in Canada). The Catholic Charlotte Mason website "Mater Amabilis" is another possibility.

Mary Fabien Windett Books and Vision Books are good. Also, The Story Of The Mass By James Conniff. (Imprimatur 1954.) by Newmann Press is a great study book. Some other good books are King of the Golden City and The Weight of a Mass by Josephine Nobisson by Emmanuel Books.

If you can find it, "With Jesus Suffering, thoughts on the Passion, written for Children" by N.Schneiders, C.P. originally published 1948 It's about 500 pages and you read a short excerpt every day and discuss what you have read.
All have is a copy, it went through our homeschool group years ago, but this book teaches the entire faith to children as played out by our Lord's Passion. The introduction begins:
My Dear Children:
This book was written for you, not for grown -ups. Of course, what is good for you is good for them also; and so this book may help them as well as you. Still, there are ever so many good books that tell of the sufferings of our Lord which were written for older people , and these they can and should read. But this book was written epecially for you; and i know of no other book ( though there may be such) that tells the beautiful strory of what our dear Lord suffered for us and how He suffered and why He suffered, which was written just for children.

It is strange for children love to hear about the good Jesus. They wish to know what He did and said when He was on earth ..........

You should check out the Family Formation program at www.familyformation.net. This program is second to none. Many homeschool families use this across the country. It is based on the liturgical year and would be perfect for your husband to do with your children.
