We are using Angelicum, but I just got the book they use today "I learn about Jesus" and I'm not very impressed with it. DD wasn't either.

Is there anything a little more meaty and orthdox faith-wise geared toward this age level? Cost is a factor for us too.

You could try "Chats with God's Little Ones" by Margaret Mary Myers published by Our Lady of Victory School (www.olvs.org). Another option is "Who Am I?," the first book in the Image of God Series published by Ignatius Press. There are two pre-school workbooks (one for three-year-olds and one for four-year-olds) and a kindergarten workbook. "Chats with God's Little Ones" is more like a question-answer book with a few coloring activities, "Who Am I?" has different activities (action prayers, coloring, matching, crafts, Bible Stories). I'm using them both together with a children's Bible.

"We cannot emphasize too much the importance of the Mass, a divine service of love, because God became man to give himself to us through Jesus Christ who comes to us in the form of bread and wine, through Sacrament. Since we get spiritual life through Mass, by eating the flesh and drinking blood of Christ, the Mass is the greatest blessing, and life itself, for Christians?I pray that this fairy tale, The Weight of the Mass, makes a deep impression on everyone: the old and the young, women and men, and children, so that they will have enthusiastic love for God."

JMJ
when my children where that young, 2-4 we found the most beautiful pictures of the Blessed Mother, Angels and Jesus and other things about our faith we could. Magazines, books discarded from the library, art books at garage sales and we cut out the pictures. the visuals of beautiful things concerning our faith are very important. We helped our little ones put them in 'books' they made themselves, sometimes cut and pasted or put into photo album type. we used the pictures to tell them the stories about our faith. We let them take the books to Holy Mass to look at. While the gospel was read and father was giving his homily , we have always gone to daily Mass so this was part of their days lesson, they were allowed to draw a picture about what the gospel was about and or what father talked about in his homily. they drew pictures of Saints and angels and Jesus on the cross and many more. We put these also into their homemade religion Mass book. On the way home we asked them to tell about their picture and the gospel and what father had said. My husband and i are catechists so for children that young that don't read we don't rely on 'books' and money has been an issue for us too, but you don't have to be a catechist to have the graces to know what to say.
One more thing, we always have sat in the front row so the children could see the altar, it helps to keep them focused on Mass, and not looking on peoples backs. If a little one got too noisey or rowdy then i jsut stepped out or usually to the side and let them look at the stations or stainglass, that a big part of early education too.
